Review & Recipe: Homemade pizzas with Cirio tomato base

My three LOVE pizza!

And they love getting  involved and making their own even more.

If they have a shop bought pizza, not only do I not know what additives it has, but also they will only ever choose a plain cheese one.

If they make their own they are a lot more adventurous and will add vegetables so I know they are getting at least a little part of their 5-a-day!

Because they tend to load their pizzas heavily with the tomato base & toppings, I find that when I make my own base and leave it uncooked it goes soggy and doesn't crisp up as well. They are also a nightmare to transfer to the oven and get very stick! 

So now I make up and bake the base in advance. They can even be frozen for future use.

The children always hate the wait for the dough to be made and just want to get stuck in with loaded the base with things so this way works much better for us.

This time I also pre-made a tomato base up using the Cirio chopped tomatoes we were given to review (Here). The tomatoes are so rich in flavour that not much needs to be done with them to make a base sauce to be honest and I even saw on the Cirio website that they sell a tomato sauce specifically for pizza to make it even easier for you!

Today the children decided they wanted cheese, sweetcorn, finely chopped peppers & salami on their pizzas.

That is A LOT of sweetcorn!!

And for some reason LL was insistent she wanted to use the raw carrot sticks I had put out as a side snack too.

They both made their pizza's into faces.

Maybe BBs is a monster with 5 eyes?

Most importantly they were yummy and I new exactly what was in them.

For the base:
300g self raising flour
50g margerine
50ml semi-skimmed milk
2 eggs
60g mozzarella

For the sauce:
100g Cirio finely chopped tomatoes
1 tsp chopped garlic
1 tsp oregano

60g grated cheese of your choice (we used mozzarella mixed with cheddar)
Any other veg or meat toppings of your choice.


1. Sieve the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the margerine. Use your hands to rub into a crumb mixture.

2. In a small bowl, whisk the eggs with the milk then add to the crumb mixture and beat together until a thick, dough like consistency.

3. Using your hands, make the dough into a ball and put onto a floured work surface.
Roll out the dough into a flat base as thick or thin as you like.

4. Cut the outside of the base about 1cm in, towards to centre, spaced evenly around the edge.
Place your thin mozzarella slices around the edge of the pizza, 1cm in, then fold over the cut edges to cover.

5. Put onto a baking tray and bake in a pre-heated oven at 200c for 20 minutes.

6. Whilst that is cooking, make your tomato sauce by simmering the tomatoes, garlic and oregano for 5 minutes, until it starts to reduce and thicken slightly.

7. When the base is cooked, take out and cool before letting your children loose with loading it with toppings - sauce, cheese then any cooked meat or vegetables you want.

8. Bake in the oven at 200c for 8-10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and browing.

  4. I cheat and use wraps as well but keep meaning to make my own dough. This looks easy so will have to try. My kids LOVE pizza as well (we had it twice last week oops!).
